This year the Maes is home to a little treasure for Welsh music lovers. It might go unnoticed when you pass by it, but at the stand 1227-1230 you will find an amazing exhibition of iconic Welsh album covers.
This project, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, commemorates 40 years of the first-ever Welsh-language concept album, “Salem” by Endaf Emlyn. What people can find on display is 40 different iconic covers that ten individuals involved in the Welsh music scene have selected for the occasion.
The curator of the exhibition is the artist Rhys Aneurin, who says that this is a good opportunity to look at these album covers as pieces of art. Each of the covers is accompanied by a short text in which the person explains the reasons why he or she has chosen it. In these you will find all sorts of stories about childhood memories and past trends that summarise these 40 years of Welsh rock.
There is an album for everybody, and many covers put a smile on people faces when they find the one that brings them memories from their youth. The exhibition will be touring after the National Eisteddfod, but you still have time to see it at the festival. Whatever your taste, this is a great celebration of Welsh music that everybody will enjoy.
