Highlights of the day: Wednesday

6 August 2014

Time flies here at the Maes! We have already expend our fifth day at the National Eisteddfod and things are only getting better. You can check here just some of the highlight of the day.

Everything ready for Maes B

The atmosphere is always great at the National Eisteddfod, but now that Maes B is about to start it feels even more diverse. This afternoon I could spot much more youth than in previous days, all of them ready for the next four nights of music, camping and fun. But what amazes me the most is the mix of people that the the festival brings together. Just next to the trendy youngsters that walked today around the Maes you could easily spot older ladies wearing their traditional Welsh costumes. The National Eisteddfod is getting busier and it feels great with the sunny weather that shined today at the Maes.

A teacher in Patagonia

The Maes D is an extremely welcoming place for those of us who don’t have Welsh language skills. You can attend lectures, do a Welsh taster session or have a coffee in great company as I did today. There I had the pleasure to meet Angharad Rowe, a Welsh teacher from Abertawe that spent 5 years in the Welsh colony that exists in Patagonia. It felt weird talking in Spanish with a Welsh woman that had argentinian accent, but I was amazed by her Spanish and her cheerful character. She was also a good proof of how far Welsh can go, as people like her embark every year in adventures like this to keep Welsh culture and language spreading around the world.

Album covers exhibition

My other highlight of the day is the Welsh album covers exhibition that I visited today. Although I didn’t know most of the albums on display, it was a great opportunity for me to learn a bit more about Welsh culture and its musical scene. Just by the images on the covers and the tunes that accompanied me during the visit, I got the feeling that the bands playing this year at Maes B have plenty of hits to get inspired from.
